 2021 Annual Exemption Applications


The 2021 Annual Exemption Applications will be mailed out in the late spring or early summer of 2021.

Please note:  if you have never signed up for an exemption, we can help you get signed up.  Forms are available on the Will County SOA website or we can assist you at the Township Assessor’s Office Monday – Friday from 8:00-4:00.  Masks recommended for unvaccinated people.  Please contact us at 815-744-5806 if you have any questions.

Will County Supervisor of Assessments, Rhonda R. Novak,  received notice Friday, July 23, that Governor Pritzker signed HB-3289. If a taxpayer received a renewable exemption in 2020 it will be carried over for 2021.

 Any new applicants still need to apply for their desired exemption, otherwise all received and processed exemptions in 2020 will carry over to the 2021 levy year.

Photo of a senior couple. There are several exemptions available to homeowners. Please read the list below to see if you are eligible for any or all.  Our office has all the necessary applications and our helpful staff will assist you with the completion of all applications.

Requirements do vary based upon the exemption. Here is a short list of the basic requirements. Please contact our office for more details and specific information.

Exemptions Available:  (Please note the amount of exemption is off your assessed value.)(You may check the right side of your property tax bill to see if you are already receiving any exemptions.)

General Homestead - $6,000
Must be the property owner, must be your principle residence and must be responsible for the payment of property taxes.  This exemption will remain with your property unless you move.

General Senior Homestead - $5,000
Same requirements as the General Homestead exemption, plus must be 65 years of age or older. Does not have to be renewed unless you move.

Returning Veteran - $5000 (one time per deployment)
Same requirements as the General Homestead exemption, plus DD214.  If still active, military orders and travel voucher DD 220.

Disabled Persons Homestead Exemption - $2,000
Same requirements as the General Homestead exemption, plus Class 2 or 2a state disabled ID card or proof of social security benefits which includes an awards letter.  No age requirement but name must be on the deed. This exemption requires an annual renewal.

Disabled Veteran - Starting at $2,500
Requirements:  *Public Act 99-0375 increases the exemption amounts in 35 ILCS 200/15-169 and lowers the service-connected disability threshold to qualify for the exemption beginning with the 2015 tax year for property taxes payable in 2016. Requirements for this exemption are very detailed and this exemption requires an annual renewal. Property Tax Relive for Veterans.  

Senior Freeze – Varies (please note the freeze does not freeze your taxes-it freezes your assessed value)
Requirements:  Property owner, principle residence, responsible for the payment of property taxes, plus 65 years of age or older and total household income must be below $65,000. A copy of your filed income tax and social security benefit statement is required. If you do not file income tax, bring all income related statements with you. This exemption requires an annual renewal.

Homestead Improvement – Up to $25,000
Requirements:  Property Owner, principle residence, responsible for the payment of property taxes. (Certain improvements that would add to your assessed value such as decks, in-ground pools, additions, etc.) (Four year exemption).This exemption is applied by the assessor.
